The Power of Strategic Foresight to Transform Change Management: From Process to Story

Basic Outline:

The Postnormal Economy & the Need for Futures Thinking. Gone are the days of relying upon simple, linear processes and familiar business models. Economists, social scientists, and business gurus agree that we have entered the Postnormal Economy, a world that is in constant change

Futures Thinking and Change.  We are used to depending on hindsight to run our businesses, schools, and countries, but this can no longer be our practice in a rapidly changing world.  Our leaders must develop the skill of identifying emerging issues, building alternative scenarios, and creating transformational futures.

Transforming Narratives for Organizational Change. Traditional change management processes are no longer effective in an environment of accelerated volatility and uncertainty. Our new era of complexity demands that change management employs both quantitative and qualitative thinking and tools, creating holistic stories of change.

Description:

The power of foresight lies not primarily in its tools and methods but in its ability to alter perspectives and create stories of change. With an integrated  approach,  firms can  create  narratives  of  the  future  that  have  the ability to truly alter  their organizational culture and redefine change management for the complex landscape of the 21st century. It is through the creation of a future-‐empowered culture that processes are transformed, innovation is inspired, and targets are surpassed. With a holistic approach that incorporates both quantitative and qualitative thinking and action, businesses can create an organization that has the ability to be truly transformational. Establishing a long-‐term  transformational  narrative  and culture is not easy, but it isn't brain surgery either. Firms that leverage the new rules of business, society and technology can move their organizations toward tangible and lasting results.

Learning  Objectives:

Expand their field of vision around the possibilities of the future so that they can create better change management pathways.

Become more adaptive, resilient and transformational, adopting the cycle of “learn -‐  unlearn -‐  relearn” as a critical part  of  their  organization’s  culture.

Explore how narrating your organization’s ‘story of change’ can transform change management from process to competency.
