Program:  9:00 – 11:00 am

Program Information:

Positive Psychology is the scientific study of what goes right in life. It takes seriously as a subject matter the things that make life worth living. Positive psychologists measure the construct well-being (aka happiness). Well-being has 5 measurable elements PERMA: Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Achievement. Underpinning and supporting these elements are the very strengths and virtues that enable individuals, organizations, and communities to thrive and even flourish.

Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman runs the Center for Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1998, when elected president of the APA, Seligman challenged his membership to study the neglected side of psychology, the side that studies strengths and virtues. Positive psychology practitioners seek to bridge the gap between research findings and practical applications in life and the workplace. Our guest speaker, Lisa Jacobson, is one of those practitioners.  She studied under Seligman and is eager to share the research and how it is being applied in the workplace.

Her presentation will . . .

  • Define what positive psychology is and is not.
  • Review research findings about happy people and engaged employees
  • Demonstrate selected best practices from positive psychology research
  • Explain how Appreciative Inquiry and the Strengths movement are related to positive psychology
  • Demonstrate how the identification of strengths is fundamental to performance
  • Review several best practices with potential for workplace applications

Presented by:  Lisa Jacobson, Career Consultant and Executive Coach
